Rhodes Holds Ceremony for 'The Rat' Expansion

Rhodes College hosted a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony for the expanded Catherine Burrow Refectory – also known at the “Rat” – Monday, Aug. 20, at 2000 North Parkway.

The Catherine Burrow Refectory, named in honor of the late Mrs. A. K. Burrow and dedicated in 1925, is the college’s main dining facility.

The expanded Refectory includes 19,000 square feet of new space, including a new grand servery, fireside lounge, new kitchen, new private dining rooms and a new grand dining hall. It also features comfortable furnishings and a variety of seating options designed for students to dine and socialize.

The Daily News first reported The Rat’s expansion in May 2011. Memphis-based Grinder, Taber & Grinder Inc. was the general contractor on the project, and the site’s architect was Norfolk, Va.-based Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Co.

Burr & Cole Consulting Engineers Inc. provided civil and structural services, and OGCB Inc. was responsible for mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fire protection.
