Rhodes starting $3.7 million renovation of Briggs Hall

Rhodes College's general contractor, Grinder, Taber & Grinder, has filed for a construction permit on a $3.7 million renovation of Briggs Hall.The 50-year-old building has never received a major renovation, said Ken Woodmansee, spokesman for the college.The interior and exterior of the 20,000-square-foot building will be improved for classrooms and offices, Woodmansee said. Briggs is being converted from a student life center to an academic building, primarily for computer science.Briggs Hall is adjacent to a new science building, Robertson Hall, now under construction.The renovation of Briggs Hall should be completed in summer 2017 when Robertson Hall is finished.The two projects are part of the second phase in a multiyear, $55 million expansion of Rhodes College's science facilities. The initial phase included the renovation of Rhodes Tower.
