The vision behind Buster's East location was to craft more than just a store; it was a dream to offer an unforgettable experience for both loyal patrons and new customers alike. Recognizing the potential of the expansive 18,000 square-foot space, Grinder, Taber, & Grinder, in partnership with Buster's, understood that this retail space would evolve into a coveted destination for the entire Memphis community.
The transformation, led by designshop architecture in collaboration with GTG, started as a former Staples retail store. After much deliberation and design detailing, what emerged was a plan to create a space that beautifully balanced grand openness with intimate, curated rooms.
The wood flooring and intricate detailing throughout the store foster an atmosphere of warmth, deliberately mirroring the essence of the original Highland location. Maximizing the full potential of the expansive ceiling space was a key component. GTG incorporated an array of lighting installations, along with ceiling imports from Spain, strategically placed to accentuate the spirits lining the aisles. Additionally, a light-art installation was fixed above the central tasting kiosk, and checkout counter, serving as a focal point.
A key feature of the store is the stunning 90-foot backlit whiskey wall, meticulously crafted from rich walnut-toned wood to create a sophisticated and timeless backdrop. Soft, ambient lighting was chosen to highlight the refined appearance of each bottle, with careful attention to evoke the feeling of a luxury exhibition rather than a traditional retail display.
Buster’s has built a legacy of offering exceptional wines, making it essential to design a space that truly showcases these high-end offerings. GTG crafted a climate-controlled fine wine room, which is framed by an elegant, frameless glass entryway. In the center of the room lies an elegant white marble table installation—used to socialize and taste the various products of the space. In turn, creating a minimalist yet lavish retreat, where the finest wines can be admired and enjoyed.
While the store's premium spirits remain the centerpiece, highlighting Buster's cigar collection was a must. A walk-in cigar humidor was designed to do so. The humidor is encased in glass with Spanish cedar wood beams and doorframes, creating an immediate sensory experience. Inside, tilted cedar shelves were installed to present the wide array of premium cigars offered.
The new East location isn't just about customer-facing beauty; GTG worked to integrate a thoughtful functionality, as well. Behind the scenes, new administrative offices, a public-facing conference room, and a dedicated training space were constructed to streamline operations
Buster's East expansion represents the next chapter in Buster's story— a space thoughtfully built to harmonize cutting-edge functionality with a deep commitment to hospitality. This project doesn't just offer retail, every decision and design element is meant to create an experience. It embodies legacy, celebrates community, and honors the enduring spirit of Memphis.
