Looking to accommodate a growing student body and expanded programming, Memphis Merit Academy chose to transform a former Kroger store/shopping center into a state-of-the-art educational institution. This renovation is a prime example of adaptive reuse, transforming an underutilized retail space into a vibrant facility that will serve students for years to come.
The newly designed school caters to a growing student body, currently serving K-5th grade with plans to expand to 8th grade. A flexible and open layout promotes an environment conducive to learning and growth, with dedicated spaces for classrooms, a cafeteria, and an assembly area. The school also features a specially designed playground, providing students with a safe and welcoming outdoor space.
To enhance the interior atmosphere, a roof opening was created, allowing natural light to flood the building and foster a bright, positive environment. A central courtyard also serves as a play area for students, contributing to their overall well-being and engagement.
In addition to the structural and aesthetic changes, essential systems like HVAC and electrical were overhauled to meet the needs of the school now and in the future. As Memphis Merit Academy continues to grow, this newly renovated space will support its mission of providing high-quality education to a community with few resources, all while preparing for further development and expansion.
