Tennessee's oldest museum is in need of a larger, more modernized space to house its grand collection of artwork. Grinder, Taber, & Grinder was chosen as the General Contractor to bring the Brooks' new home—renamed the Memphis Art Museum—to downtown Memphis. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and archimania, the MAM is sure to be a world-class museum and cultural hub.
The building is set to be 122,000 SF and house 60% more art compared to the Brooks Museum. This new and improved space will feature galleries and educational spaces to not only observe art but participate in it as well. Above, a floor-to-ceiling, glass-walled theatre offers views of the river and city skyline—providing the perfect backdrop for any event or large-scale gathering. The new, Downtown location will act as the community’s “den,” offering free access to a courtyard, a rooftop garden, a stunning terrace view of the Mississippi River and more opportunities for families to explore, learn, and interact with the museum.
In case of emergencies, rooms and doorframes are fireproofed to assist the integrity of individual rooms in order to prevent any potential damage to the building or artwork. Conversely, moisture and humidity regulations are being implemented to stabilize the surrounding environment and temperature—to counteract cracks, detachment, or irreparable damage to the art.
